It had only been a short amount of time since Elijah decided to return to his family, but what was he returning to exactly? His family was broken. He felt like a shadow of his former self. The original actually felt lost. Despite the fact that he was an all-powerful being and there was barely anything left on the planet that could take him down, he felt like there was a part of himself that was missing. Most likely a part of himself that would never fully return no matter how hard he tried to pick up the pieces. Elijah was not foreign to losing people, but this particular loss struck him the hardest. For once in his immortal life, he felt like his family was broken beyond repair. After everything he and his family had been through over the years, he would have thought that they were stronger than this, but losing his older sister and his niece took a toll on him. For once, he wouldn’t even wish this kind of pain upon his worst enemy. And that was saying a lot. It had been one hundred and thirty two years since Elijah set foot upon the soil of New Orleans. He and his family immediately left following the events that struck all of them. Of course he was going to return to Mount Weather shortly after he finished up in the damaged city, but he felt like he needed to return. Everything looked the exact same. Buildings were destroyed. The sky looked bleak. The original continued walking through the rubble as if searching for something. A few moments later, he finally landed upon his destination. He kneeled down and gently picked up the emblem that had the letter M on it to indicate Mikaelson. His expression hardened as he stared at the symbol. It was something that brought back a lot of memories when things seemed simpler even though they had countless enemies at the time. Although the majority of their previous enemies had been destroyed, there was always a chance that new enemies would come about. His eyes closed for a moment as old memories resurfaced in his mind. His right hand began to shake slightly. Elijah rarely let his emotions show, which played a factor in him wanting to break away from his family. He needed to grieve on his own. In his own way. He didn’t want anyone to see him break down and lose control. For centuries, he had been the calm and collected Mikaelson. The one that was most rational. Not anymore. He was torn apart. Broken. Possibly beyond repair.

Katherine usually wasn’t the one to reminisce too often –she wasn’t too fond of the feeling that came along with it. To her, at least for most part, thinking about things that have been or could have been seemed like a complete waste. In all honesty, she had no time for it, simply because the was too focused on her own survival. That was how it was with Katherine and at times, it seemed as though it would remain that way forever. Which was a sad thought in itself – surviving but never truly living. Still, in her mind, it was better than dying. No matter how much she despised it deep down.
But occasionally, she would allow herself a few minutes of going down the memory lane. And truth be told, she LOVED New Orleans. The music, the food, the people. The whole energy of the city was magnetizing. So she found herself visiting a couple times, of course, only when she was absolutely sure not a single Mikaelson was anywhere near it. So that was how she found herself there. Doing the one thing she hated. Reminiscing.
That was, until she heard something, or rather someone. In a blink of an eye, she was hidden, hoping to gain an upper hand. However, much to her dismay, all of that flew right out of the window the second her eyes landed on him. Knowing she had no other choice, she stepped out of the shadows reveling herself.
There was something off, something different about him. That much she knew, just by looking at him. This person seemed much too different from the Elijah she knew once upon a time.
"Elijah?"

Reminiscing about the past was something that Elijah often did. Things were better. Even though there were enemies at every corner, at least he was able to deal with anything that came his way because he had his family on his side. When Hope and Freya died, he didn’t have that anymore. The Mikaelson family felt more broken than ever and there was nothing that Elijah could have done to fix it. He was at a loss, which is why he left to try to find himself. Shortly after returning to his family, he decided to take a trip to what was left of New Orleans, not that there was much to see. Everything was destroyed. Just the way it was left over a hundred years ago.
The original was lost in his own thoughts, but a familiar voice broke him out of his trance. He froze and his eyes slightly widened as he gripped the Mikaelson symbol that was still in his grasp. It was a voice that he had not heard in quite some time. A voice that almost faded from his memory until the specific person said his name. He slowly turned around to see who it was and it was exactly who he thought. Katherine Pierce. “Katerina.” He said, taking a slight step towards her. “What are you doing here?” He asked. He hadn’t really kept up with news that went on in Mystic Falls back in the day when he had so much going on in New Orleans, but he had heard that Katherine had died, but it seemed that she was back. He remembered the last time that they parted. He cared about her deeply, but he realized that she never would have felt the same way as he did. But it did not matter. All of that was in the past. During a time where he actually had something to fight for. “Are you here to gloat about the fact that my family is finally in ruin?” He asked. They had been in ruin for quite some time. Rebekah and Kol were gone. Niklaus stepped back into old habits. Hayley felt isolated and Elijah did not know where his place was anymore. Without preserving his family, what did he have? Who was he?

Katerina. A name she hadn’t heard in years. Centuries even. A name she didn’t even think belonged to her anymore. For she didn’t think she knew who that girl was. If you asked Katherine, that girl was long gone. In fact, she died the very same day the brunette turned into a . Into a SURVIVOR. A girl that longed-for love and happiness was forced to turn into the ruthless, calculative monster she was today. In order to escape and survive Klaus, she needed to become him. And so she did.
She quickly learned that true love was nothing more than a myth. True love was not going to help her survive. The only one who could truly help her was none other than she, herself. As it turned out, it didn’t matter how much she cared for Elijah once upon a time, he was never going to help her. The love he CLAIMED he had for her wasn’t strong enough to beat ALWAYS AND FOREVER. Truth be told, over the years that came after, the often wondered if he ever really cared for her to begin with. He was the one to turn her heart dark, making a vow to herself –never again would she give herself completely over to anyone. She was her own ALWAYS AND FOREVER.
“I go by Katherine now. Come on Elijah, you know this.”
So even when they tried making it work, last time around, she couldn’t bring herself to break that promise. She couldn’t bring herself to trust him. So and now, they were here. “As hard as this might be for you to believe, no, that’s not why I’m here. Better question is, why are you?”

If they had this conversation over a hundred years ago, her words would have stung. That she went by Katherine now rather than Katerina. He obviously knew this, but he normally called her by her original name unless he was in a bad mood. It seemed that ‘Katerina’ was finally a name that was dead to her. Things were not how they used to be. The last time that he and Katherine had actually seen each other was when he left her to go to New Orleans, but he knew that she did not fully trust him. How could she? But there had been a time when the elder original had truly cared for the doppelganger. Until he realized that she did what she had always done and only watched out for herself. Not caring about who she hurt because she was a survivor. Elijah felt like he did not fit in with that agenda and he knew that his brother needed him in New Orleans, so he left and went to where he thought he belonged. Now he felt like he was at a dark point in his life.
“And when has that stopped me from calling you Katerina in the past?” He asked curiously. He knew she went by Katherine, but he usually addressed her as her original name. Then again, everything had changed. The original raised an eyebrow when she mentioned that that was not the reason as to why she was in New Orleans. Then she decided to turn the question onto him and ask why he was there. “That is not a better question because the answer should be quite obvious.” He responded, taking a slight step towards the doppelganger. “I used to live here. New Orleans was my home. I have not stepped foot here since the incident.” Why would he? There was nothing to return to, but he felt like he needed to do this to finally let the past rest. “You have still not answered my question.”
