Damon has not even thought about Mystic Falls since he left. He left a few years ago after losing his brother and turning off his humanity. Damon was having the time of his life in New York. He went to New York and reopened his friend Will's bar. Will's bar was where he spent most of the 1970s when he would kill people and steal their identities for vampires that were on the run. Back then he didn't know it but he was actually stealing identities for Katherine who was on the run from Klaus after faking her death back in 1864. Now he was the bar owner but when he needed to feed he would see what identities he needed and then kill people he was sure it would get back to Mystic Falls but the only people who cared about him killing people were Stefan and Elena. Stefan was dead and Elena was still in a sleeping coma so he really didn't have anything to worry about.
As time went by business was doing good but Damon started getting curious about what was going on back home. It wasn't because he cared about his friends or anything because he didn't have any emotions. He was just curious. As a bartender he would chat up his customers and learn where they were from. Sometimes they lived in New York and sometimes they came from other places. Occasionally, Damon found someone from Virginia so he would ask anyone from Virginia to go to Mystic Falls and find out what was going on there.
One night when he was tending bar Ben, one of the vampires he had sent to give him a report on Mystic Falls, came in. Damon walked over to him and placed a glass of bourbon in front of him "So Ben what is the story in Mystic Falls?" Ben lifted the glass to his lips and down it in one gulp then he looked at Damon "Well your house is now a school thanks to some blonde named Caroline. There is a human living there that has the last name of Salvatore but I didn't get his first name an.d I think that the doppleganger chick woke up." Damon looked at him curiously as he poured him another glass of bourbon "So let me see if I have this straight. There is another Salvatore living at the boarding school and Elena Gilbert is awake? Well it looks like I need to pay Mystic Falls a visit then."
Damon made arrangements at the bar for someone to take over for him while he was gone and then he jumped in his car and headed for Mystic Falls. When he arrived Damon wanted to go to the boarding school to see if what Ben said was true. Was someone saying they are a Salvatore and living in the school? Was Elena really awake? Damon had to see this for himself. He walked up to the front of what used to be his house and was now The Salvatore Boarding School. He walked in the front door and the first thing he saw was the huge picture of his brother living room "Well that is not pretentious at all." He said as he smirked at the picture. Then he heard someone enter the room and turned to see Elena standing in front of him "Well I see that what I heard is true, you did wake up. Hello Elena." Damon said as he smirked at Elena.
